About the Slade
The Slade School of Fine Art is internationally recognised for its experimental, research-led approach to contemporary art. As part of University College London, the Slade brings together practising artists, researchers, and theorists who explore the boundaries of creative practice through critical inquiry and innovation.
With the recent launch of the BA Art and Technology programme, the School has expanded its focus on the relationship between art and emerging technologies. Based at UCL East, this initiative creates a vibrant environment where digital tools, material experimentation, and conceptual thinking intersect.
About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity to join a forward-thinking creative and technical team supporting a new generation of artists working at the intersection of art and technology.
As a Computational Art Technician, you will play a key role in the daily operation of the Slade Studio—a collaborative, multi-functional space designed for experimentation across digital and physical media.
You will work closely with another technician to ensure the studio runs smoothly, safely, and effectively, while also supporting teaching and independent creative practice.
What You’ll Be Doing
Technical & Studio Support
- Maintain and manage studio facilities, including high-performance computing systems and digital production tools
Support students and researchers using technologies such as VR, AR, XR, motion capture, and game engines
Assist with digital fabrication processes including 3D printing, scanning, and prototyping
Provide hands-on technical guidance for both individual and group projects
Teaching & Learning Support
- Deliver workshops, demonstrations, and one-to-one technical tutorials
Assist academic staff in teaching modules related to computational art and creative technologies
Help students build confidence in both conceptual and technical aspects of their work
Operations & Safety
- Ensure all studio activities comply with health and safety regulations
Support installation and deinstallation of exhibitions involving complex technical setups
Troubleshoot technical issues and maintain equipment
Respond to feedback from students and staff to improve studio services

About You
Qualifications & Experience
- A degree (or equivalent experience) in art, design, creative technology, or a related field
Experience working in a technical support role within an art school or similar environment
Experience delivering technical training, workshops, or tutorials
Technical Skills
You should have hands-on experience with:
- Game engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine
3D modelling and animation tools (e.g. Blender)
Immersive technologies (VR/AR/XR) and motion capture systems
Programming and computational workflows
Digital fabrication (e.g. 3D printing, basic electronics, woodworking, printmaking)
Personal Attributes
- Strong problem-solving and organisational skills
Ability to manage multiple tasks and respond to changing priorities
Calm and practical approach to troubleshooting
Collaborative mindset and enthusiasm for working with students and staff
Curiosity and willingness to explore emerging technologies
