About the Opportunity

This is an exciting chance to join a growing and forward-thinking obstetrics team in Somerset. The post has been created to enhance specialist care for high-risk pregnancies and to support the development of a dedicated elective caesarean section service.

You will work in a collaborative, consultant-led environment delivering high-quality obstetric care, with a particular focus on maternal medicine and fetal wellbeing. This is a rare opportunity to work in an obstetrics-only role, allowing you to concentrate fully on complex pregnancy care without gynaecology commitments.

Role Overview

  • Full-time Consultant role (10 Programmed Activities)
    Split: 8.5 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) / 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPA)
    Participation in obstetric-only on-call rota (1:12)
    Cross-site responsibilities across Musgrove Park Hospital and Yeovil District Hospital

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership & Patient Care

  • Deliver expert obstetric care across inpatient, outpatient, and emergency settings
    Manage complex pregnancies, including those with pre-existing medical conditions
    Lead on fetal monitoring practices across both hospital sites
    Conduct fetal growth scans and Doppler assessments, particularly for growth-restricted babies

Run specialist clinics such as:

  • High-risk antenatal clinics
    Maternal medicine clinics
    Preterm birth and gestational diabetes clinics
    Service Development & Quality Improvement

Act as Fetal Monitoring Lead, supporting:

  • Staff training
    Clinical compliance
    Continuous service improvement
    Contribute to development of the elective caesarean section pathway
    Participate in audit, governance, and innovation projects

Teaching & Mentorship

  • Supervise and support junior doctors and trainees
    Contribute to medical education and training programmes
    Participate in appraisal, feedback, and professional development activities

Person Requirements

Essential Qualifications

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council
    MBBS (or equivalent)
    MRCOG (or equivalent specialist qualification)
    Specialist registration or within 6 months of achieving CCT in Obstetrics & Gynaecology

Experience & Expertise

  • Extensive clinical experience in obstetrics
    Proven ability to manage high-risk pregnancies
    Competence in fetal growth scanning and Doppler assessment
    Experience working independently at Consultant level
    Ability to contribute to a specialist service within the department

Desirable

  • Subspecialty interest (e.g. maternal medicine or fetal care)
    Higher degree (e.g. MSc)
    Qualification in medical education
    Leadership experience in labour ward or service delivery
