As a Senior Mental Health Advisor within NHS 111 (press 2), you’ll be the first point of contact for individuals experiencing a mental health crisis. Your role is not just about answering calls — it’s about offering reassurance, guiding people to the right support, and ensuring they feel heard, understood, and safe.
About the Role
In this position, you will:
- Respond to urgent mental health calls through NHS 111
Provide emotional support, reassurance, and clear guidance
Help callers access the most appropriate services quickly
Support colleagues in managing complex and high-risk situations
Act as a shift coordinator, ensuring smooth team operations
Work closely with crisis teams and other healthcare services
You’ll also play a key leadership role, helping less experienced team members build confidence and skills while maintaining high standards of care.

Key Responsibilities
- Deliver high-quality, evidence-based mental health support
Provide clinical leadership and supervision to team members
Support decision-making in complex or rapidly changing situations
Promote safeguarding practices and identify risks to vulnerable individuals
Guide staff in handling sensitive, emotional, or challenging calls
Contribute to service improvement and team development
What We’re Looking For
Essential Requirements
- Current registration with a recognised UK professional body
At least 18 months post-qualification experience
Experience working in mental health (preferably in community or urgent care settings)
Strong understanding of:
- Mental Health Act
Mental Capacity Act
Safeguarding procedures
Experience working in multidisciplinary teams
Ability to mentor or support colleagues and students
Desirable
- Leadership or management experience
Postgraduate qualification in a related field
Experience in service improvement or quality initiatives
