Role Overview
This is a unique opportunity to play a vital role in supporting people during moments of mental health crisis.
As a Senior Mental Health Advisor within the NHS 111 “Press 2” service, you will often be the first point of contact for individuals experiencing emotional distress or urgent mental health concerns. Your role will be to provide calm, compassionate guidance while ensuring callers are directed to the most appropriate care.
Alongside handling complex calls, you will offer clinical leadership and real-time support to Mental Health Advisors, helping them manage challenging and rapidly evolving situations.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Respond to urgent mental health calls, offering reassurance, advice, and support
Assess risk and determine the most appropriate care pathway for each caller
Provide clinical oversight and guidance to team members during complex cases
Coordinate referrals to services such as crisis teams and urgent care pathways
Act as shift coordinator, ensuring smooth day-to-day service delivery
Promote safe, effective, and evidence-based clinical practice
Support team development through supervision, mentoring, and training
Ensure safeguarding concerns are identified and escalated appropriately

What We’re Looking For
Essential Qualifications
- Current professional registration with a recognised regulatory body
Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD)
Clinical supervision qualification (or willingness to obtain)
Teaching/mentorship qualification (or willingness to complete)
Competence in IT, literacy, and numeracy
Relevant regulatory guidance:
Experience Requird
- At least 18 months post-qualification experience in mental health care
Experience working in community or urgent mental health settings
Proven ability to support individuals with complex mental health needs
Experience of working collaboratively with service users, carers, and multidisciplinary teams
Involvement in mentoring or supporting junior staff or students
Participation in quality improvement initiatives
Knowledge & Skills
Strong understanding of:
- Mental Health Act
Mental Capacity Act
Knowledge of safeguarding procedures and risk management
Familiarity with clinical governance and evidence-based practice
Understanding of psychological models of care and recovery-focused approaches
Ability to remain calm, empathetic, and decisive under pressure
