About the Role

The Department of Sociology and Criminology at the University of Sussex is seeking a part-time Assistant Professor in Criminology (Education and Scholarship) to join its academic team on a fixed-term basis.

In this role, you will contribute primarily to teaching and student support within criminology. Your responsibilities will include delivering lectures and seminars, supervising undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations, assessing coursework, and providing pastoral and academic guidance to students. You will play an active role in maintaining high standards of teaching and learning within a collaborative academic environment.

About You

You should hold a PhD in Criminology or a closely related discipline. Experience teaching in higher education is essential, along with strong communication and interpersonal skills. You must demonstrate a commitment to student engagement, inclusivity, and academic excellence, as well as the ability to work effectively within a supportive and team-oriented department.

About the Department

The Department of Sociology and Criminology is a well-established, research-led unit with a strong reputation for both teaching and research excellence. It comprises around 30 academic staff and supports approximately 450 students. The department offers successful Master’s programmes in Gender Studies and Criminology and maintains a vibrant, diverse research culture. Recent national assessments have highlighted its strengths, with a significant proportion of research rated as world-leading or internationally excellent.

This position has an eligible SOC code; however, due to its part-time nature, it does meet the requirements for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship. Applicants must have the right to work in the UK.
