Your Role
As a Neonatal Staff Nurse, you will deliver hands-on clinical care while developing expertise in neonatal practice. Your responsibilities will include:
Assessing and monitoring newborns using specialist clinical knowledge
Planning and delivering individualized care based on each baby’s needs
Operating neonatal equipment safely and reporting faults appropriately
Responding to changes in a baby’s condition with timely interventions
Participating in neonatal resuscitation and emergency care (after training)
Family-Centred Care
Supporting families is at the heart of neonatal nursing. You will:
- Communicate sensitive information with empathy and clarity
Help parents understand their baby’s condition and treatment
Provide emotional support throughout the neonatal journey
Teach essential caregiving skills to prepare families for discharge
Teamwork and Collaboration
You will work closely with a range of professionals across maternity, paediatrics, and community services to ensure continuity of care. The role also includes:
- Supporting junior staff and student nurses
Promoting a positive, team-oriented environment
Contributing to clinical governance and service improvement
Additional Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date clinical records
Follow infection prevention and safety protocols
Assist in neonatal transfers when required
Deliver compassionate care, including palliative support when needed
Identify and act on safeguarding concerns

Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
Registered Nurse (Adult, Child, or Learning Disability) with valid UK registration through Nursing and Midwifery Council
Essential Knowledge & Skills
Understanding of NHS policies including clinical governance, infection control, and risk management
Knowledge of safeguarding children procedures
Awareness of evidence-based neonatal nursing practices
Desirable
Experience working with infants or families in a healthcare setting
