Job Description
Role Overview
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is looking to appoint a dedicated and forward-thinking Consultant Obstetrician with a specialist interest in maternal medicine and fetal care. This is a newly developed post designed to enhance high-risk obstetric services and support the expansion of a dedicated elective caesarean section pathway.
This is a full-time, permanent role (10 Programmed Activities) with a split of 8.5 DCC and 1.5 SPA, alongside participation in an obstetric-only on-call rota (1:12).
The position is focused entirely on obstetrics, allowing you to concentrate on delivering high-quality care without gynaecology commitments. You will work in a supportive and collaborative environment delivering care that closely aligns with tertiary-level standards within a district general hospital.
Key Responsibilities
- In this role, you will play a central part in both clinical care and service development. Your responsibilities will include:
- Delivering high-quality obstetric care across inpatient, outpatient, and emergency settings
- Leading fetal monitoring services across Musgrove Park Hospital and Yeovil District Hospital
- Performing fetal growth scans and Doppler studies, particularly for small-for-gestational-age and growth-restricted pregnancies
Running specialist clinics, including:
- Weekly fetal scanning clinics
- Fortnightly high-risk antenatal clinics (e.g. preterm birth, gestational diabetes, maternal medical conditions)
- Supporting elective caesarean section lists and triage services
- Participating in a 1:12 consultant on-call rota with twice-daily ward rounds
- Supervising and mentoring junior doctors and contributing to education and training
- Leading and participating in clinical audits, governance activities, and quality improvement work
- Collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams to enhance patient outcomes
- Contributing to research, innovation, and service redesign initiatives

You will benefit from:

- Access to the Blue Light Card for discounts across retail and leisure
- The Trust fosters a culture built on inclusivity, wellbeing, and continuous improvement.
