Role Overview
This Clinical Fellow post offers an excellent opportunity for post-Foundation doctors who wish to develop their career in Acute Medicine and Infectious Diseases. The role combines clinical exposure within the acute medical team with specialist training in infection management.
Working at Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust—a busy teaching hospital located in one of London’s most culturally diverse communities—you will gain valuable experience managing a broad spectrum of infectious, tropical, and acute medical conditions.
The post is structured to provide hands-on clinical practice, multidisciplinary collaboration, and opportunities for teaching, quality improvement, and professional development.
Key Responsibilities
Acute Care & Deteriorating Patient Management
You will undertake the Deteriorating Patient SHO role, an essential component of the Hospital at Night service. Responsibilities include:
- Assessing and managing acutely deteriorating medical and surgical patients
- Responding to patients triggered by NEWS (National Early Warning Score) alerts
- Working closely with the Critical Care Outreach Team (CCOT)
- Initiating timely clinical interventions and escalating care when necessary
- Ensuring safe clinical handover of complex or high-risk patients
Infectious Diseases & Microbiology Exposure
As part of the Infection team, you will:
- Assist consultants in managing infectious and tropical diseases
- Interpret microbiology and laboratory diagnostic results
- Support treatment planning for inpatient and ambulatory patients
- Contribute to infection-related clinical decision-making across specialties
Professional Development

Essential Requirements
Qualifications
Applicants must have:
- MBBS / MBChB or equivalent medical degree
- Full registration with the General Medical Council
- Completion of Foundation Year 1 and 2 (or equivalent)
- Valid right to work in the UK or eligibility for visa sponsorship

Clinical Experience
Candidates should demonstrate:
- At least 6 months of Acute or General Medicine experience at FY2 level
- Experience participating in an unselected acute medical take
- Exposure to general surgical specialties at FY1 level or equivalent
- Sound clinical judgement and evidence-based decision making
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
- The following would strengthen an application:
- MRCP Part 1, MRCEM Part A, or FRCPath Part 1
- Completion of Core Medical Training (CMT) / IMT or equivalent
Diploma or postgraduate training in:
- Medical Microbiology
- Tropical Medicine & Hygiene
- Experience in ITU/HDU, Emergency Medicine, or Ambulatory Care
- Laboratory or research experience related to infection or microbiology
Skills & Competencies
Successful applicants will demonstrate:
- Strong organisational and time-management skills
- Ability to prioritise clinical workload effectively
- Analytical thinking and structured clinical reasoning
- Competence using hospital IT systems (EPR, PACS, electronic ordering systems)
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
- Experience with the WinPath laboratory system or advanced procedural skills would be advantageous.

- Audit methodology and quality improvement
- Basic research principles
