About the Role

Do you want to make a meaningful difference in the lives of older adults experiencing mental health challenges? TEWV NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a motivated Allied Health Professions (AHP) Assistant to join our Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) and Dietetic Mental Health service for Older People (MHSOP) across Darlington and Teesside inpatient wards.

This role is ideal for individuals enthusiastic about supporting holistic, person-centered care within a dynamic multidisciplinary team. You will work under the guidance of registered SLTs and Dietitians while gaining valuable experience, supervision, and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunities.

 Visa Information: Applicants must have the Right to Work in the UK. This role is eligible for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship.

Key Responsibilities

As an AHP Assistant, your duties will include:

Clinical Support

  • Assist with delivering SLT and dietetic interventions under supervision, including communication support and eating, drinking, and swallowing programmes.
  • Support engagement in individualised care plans and group therapy sessions.
  • Promote independence and well-being of patients through compassionate care.

Team Collaboration

  • Work alongside a multidisciplinary team including nurses, therapists, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Represent the SLT and Dietetic service within the wards, helping embed allied health contributions into holistic patient care.
  • Support quality improvement initiatives and contribute to positive ward culture.

Patient and Carer Engagement

  • Build therapeutic relationships with patients and their families to facilitate meaningful participation in care.
  • Encourage patient choice, dignity, and respect in all interactions.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential:

  • NVQ Level 3 in Health or Social Care (or willingness to complete within an agreed timeframe)
  • AVCE in Health & Social Care
  • Numeracy, Literacy, and ITQ Level 2 (or equivalent)

Experience

Essential:

Experience (paid or voluntary) working with people with mental health conditions or learning disabilities
Desirable:

Experience supporting AHP therapists in clinical practice

Knowledge & Skills

  • Awareness of needs of older people with mental health conditions
  • Understanding of therapeutic approaches and terminology (within agreed timescale)
  • Ability to communicate clearly and appropriately, both verbally and in writing
  • Basic record-keeping and time management skills
  • Knowledge of health and safety in clinical settings (within agreed timescale)
