Introduction
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an enthusiastic and forward‑thinking Consultant Obstetrician with a substantive interest in maternal medicine and high‑risk pregnancy care. This key post has been developed to strengthen our high‑risk obstetrics service and lead the evolving dedicated elective caesarean section programme.
This role is clinical and leadership‑focused, based in obstetrics only (no gynaecology commitments), and sits within a collaborative, supportive and inclusive multi‑disciplinary team delivering near‑tertiary care in a district general hospital setting.
Role Summary
As Consultant Obstetrician (Maternal Medicine & Fetal Care), you will:
Clinical Duties
- Deliver high‑quality obstetric care across inpatient, outpatient, and emergency settings.
- Provide expert assessment and management of complex pregnancies, including:
- Fetal growth scans
- Doppler assessment for small for gestational age (SGA) and growth‑restricted babies
- Conduct weekly growth scan clinics and fortnightly specialist high risk antenatal clinics (e.g., diabetes, epilepsy, preterm birth prevention).
- Participate in the obstetric‑only on‑call rota, undertaking twice‑daily consultant‑led ward rounds.
- Cover elective caesarean lists and triage sessions.
Leadership & Service Development
- Lead fetal monitoring services across Musgrove Park and Yeovil District Hospitals.
- Support training, compliance, audit and quality improvement within fetal surveillance.
- Supervise junior doctors, support education, appraisal and professional development.
- Contribute to clinical governance, innovation and service improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide senior clinical leadership in high risk obstetrics and fetal surveillance.
- Support development of evidence‑based care pathways.
- Foster multidisciplinary collaboration across obstetrics, neonatology, maternal medicine, diabetes, endocrinology, mental health and surgical specialties.
- Contribute to research activity, teaching programmes and national studies where appropriate.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
- MBBS (or equivalent medical degree)
- Full UK GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Specialist registration (or within 6 months of application)
- MRCOG or equivalent specialist qualification
- CCT (or within 6 months of award)
- Desirable Qualifications
- Higher degree (e.g., MSc)
- SITIM or equivalent postgraduate training in maternal medicine/fetal care
- Higher qualification in medical education
Experience & Skills
Essential
- Strong clinical experience in obstetrics, especially high‑risk pregnancy management
- Skill in fetal growth scanning and Doppler techniques
- Ability to work autonomously and make senior clinical decisions
Desirable
- Experience in labour ward leadership or advanced practice
- Previous involvement in audit, governance or quality improvement projects
