Overview of the Fellowship
Great Ormond Street Hospital is inviting applications for a one-year Fellowship in Paediatric Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine, beginning in August 2026.
This training opportunity is designed for clinicians who aim to specialize in paediatric anaesthesia and pain management. The fellowship provides intensive clinical exposure within a major tertiary paediatric referral centre, offering hands-on experience across a wide range of complex paediatric cases.
This is a Trust Fellow position and does not include a National Training Number (NTN). Applicants should hold the FRCA qualification or possess equivalent knowledge and be within two years of completing specialist anaesthesia training.
Candidates must also be eligible to register with the General Medical Council before the start of employment.
Key Responsibilities
The successful fellow will contribute to clinical, educational, and governance activities within the department.
Clinical Duties
- Deliver safe and effective elective and emergency anaesthesia services for paediatric patients.
- Provide specialist care in paediatric pain medicine.
- Governance and Quality Improvement
- Participate in clinical governance processes, including incident reporting and departmental reviews.
- Attend morbidity and mortality meetings.
- Undertake audit and quality improvement projects to enhance patient care.
Teaching and Training
- Support the education and development of junior doctors and multidisciplinary staff.
- Contribute to departmental teaching sessions and training programmes.
- Administrative and Leadership Tasks
- Assist with departmental management activities when required.
- Contribute to service development initiatives.
- Information on NHS professional standards and governance

Eligibility and Qualifications
Essential Requirements
Applicants must demonstrate the following:
- A primary medical qualification (MBBS or equivalent)
- Eligibility for full registration with the General Medical Council
- FRCA qualification or equivalent level of knowledge
- At least three years of higher specialist training in anaesthesia
- One year of paediatric anaesthesia experience or similar exposure
- Demonstrated interest in pain medicine
- Experience in audit, teaching, and clinical governance
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
Desirable Qualifications
The following are advantageous but not mandatory:
- MRCP, MRCPCH, or equivalent postgraduate qualification
- Higher academic degree (MSc or MPhil)
- Paediatric simulation training (e.g., MEPA)
- Advanced life support courses such as APLS or EPALS
- Experience in related paediatric specialties
- Peer-reviewed research publications

- Communicate clearly in both written and spoken formats
