Overview of the Fellowship

Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) is inviting applications for a one-year Fellowship in Paediatric Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine, commencing in August 2026. This role is ideal for clinicians wishing to deepen their expertise in paediatric anaesthesia and pain management at a busy tertiary referral centre.

This position is a Trust Fellowship and does not carry a National Training Number (NTN). Candidates should hold FRCA or equivalent knowledge and be within two years of completing or up to two years post-completion of specialist anaesthesia training. Eligibility for GMC registration is essential.

The Fellowship offers hands-on clinical experience, opportunities in teaching, audit, and quality improvement, and exposure to paediatric pain management.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

  • Deliver high-quality elective and emergency anaesthetic care for children.
  • Support pain medicine services and provide input for complex paediatric cases.
  • Prioritise clinical needs effectively and respond safely in acute scenarios.

Governance and Quality Improvement

  • Participate in clinical governance activities, including critical incident reporting, morbidity and mortality meetings, and clinical audits.
  • Contribute to service improvement projects and quality initiatives.
  • Maintain compliance with hospital policies, including patient safety standards.

Education and Training

  • Teach and support the development of junior anaesthetic staff, trainees, and multidisciplinary team members.
  • Deliver presentations and participate in educational sessions.
  • Engage in simulation-based training where relevant.
  • Administrative and Management Tasks
  • Support departmental administrative processes.
  • Participate in rota management, meetings, and other tasks as required.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Primary medical qualification (MBBS or equivalent)
  • Full GMC registration (by designated start date)
  • FRCA or equivalent knowledge

Desirable:

  • MRCP / MRCPCH or equivalent
  • Higher degrees (MSc, MPhil)
  • Paediatric simulation training (MEPA)
  • Paediatric advanced life support (APLS / EPLS)

Experience and Knowledge

Essential:

  • At least 3 years of higher specialist training in anaesthesia
  • Minimum 1 year training in paediatric anaesthesia
  • Demonstrable interest or experience in paediatric pain medicine
  • Experience in audit, quality improvement, and clinical governance
  • Experience in teaching and multidisciplinary collaboration

Desirable:

  • Clinical experience in related paediatric specialties
  • Published research in peer-reviewed journals

Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent written and oral communication
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workloads effectively
  • Capacity to perform under pressure in multi-disciplinary settings
  • Strong clinical decision-making skills
