Role Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in General Adult Psychiatry to join the Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) on the Isle of Wight. This role is ideal for an experienced and motivated psychiatrist who wishes to contribute to a forward-thinking NHS organisation currently undergoing an important period of service transformation.

The successful candidate will provide clinical leadership, specialist psychiatric expertise, and strategic oversight to multidisciplinary teams delivering mental health services to adults across community settings. The consultant will also contribute to integrated services that may include inpatient care, crisis response teams, early intervention in psychosis services, and recovery-focused community programmes.

£30,000 Golden Hello Incentive

To attract exceptional clinicians, the Trust offers a £30,000 Golden Hello payment for successful applicants. This incentive is paid in four instalments over two years, subject to eligibility and contractual conditions.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership

The consultant psychiatrist will take a senior leadership role within the multidisciplinary team, ensuring that high-quality, evidence-based mental healthcare is delivered across services. Responsibilities include:

  • Providing expert psychiatric assessment and treatment planning for individuals with complex mental health conditions.
  • Supporting team members in the management of high-risk or severe cases through supervision and clinical oversight.
  • Leading clinical decision-making using a biopsychosocial approach to formulation and treatment planning.

Patient-Centred Care

The post holder will contribute to care that promotes recovery, independence, and wellbeing for service users by:

  • Developing personalised treatment plans with patients and carers.
  • Ensuring care pathways follow recovery-focused and evidence-based principles.
  • Monitoring and evaluating clinical interventions to improve outcomes and patient experience.

Complex Case Management

Consultants will typically maintain a smaller caseload, allowing them to focus on service users presenting with the highest complexity or risk. This ensures timely responses to urgent clinical situations and supports effective multidisciplinary working.

Risk Management and Safeguarding

The role includes responsibility for:

  • Assessing and managing clinical risk using professional judgement and evidence-based tools.
  • Supporting the team in safeguarding and risk management processes.
  • Ensuring services operate in line with national and local policies on patient safety.

Education and Team Development

Consultants will also play an important role in workforce development by:

  • Providing teaching, supervision, and mentoring to junior doctors and clinical staff.
  • Leading consultant-led case discussions, MDT reviews, and triage meetings.
  • Supporting professional development across the mental health workforce.

Professional Requirements

Essential Qualifications

Applicants must demonstrate the following qualifications and professional credentials:

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council
  • Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) or an equivalent recognised qualification
  • Eligibility for entry on the Specialist Register in General Adult Psychiatry or expected to achieve this within six months of interview
  • CCT in General Adult Psychiatry or equivalent
  • Approval under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983
