About the Role

TEWV NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Specialty Doctor in Adult Mental Health – Liaison to join the Durham and Darlington Liaison Service, one of the largest liaison teams in the North East and Cumbria.

This role is based at Darlington Memorial Hospital, covering patients across County Durham and Darlington. The post holder will provide specialist clinical input in adult mental health, supporting acute hospital services, and contributing to integrated patient care in collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver specialist liaison psychiatry assessments for adults, including follow-up appointments for patients previously seen in the Emergency Department.
  • Collaborate with ward-based teams to provide assessment, treatment, and discharge planning for patients with co-morbid mental health conditions.
  • Participate in Mental Health Act assessments, averaging 2 per week, and prioritise assessments for patients under your care.
  • Provide teaching and training for acute hospital staff.
  • Work collaboratively with consultants, other psychiatrists, and allied health professionals to ensure high-quality mental health care.
  • Occasionally provide cross-cover for older adult patients in consultation with Old Age Psychiatrists.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Registration

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Full registration with General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise
  • At least 4 years postgraduate experience, including 2 years in a core psychiatry training programme
  • Section 12 Approved under the Mental Health Act 1983 (or able to achieve within 6 months)
  • Desirable: MRCPsych or equivalent postgraduate qualification

Skills & Experience

  • Strong knowledge of psychiatry and clinical skills using a bio-psycho-social framework
  • Experience in teaching, audit, and quality improvement
  • Ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and appraisal

This role requires a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions Order 1975).
