Overview of the Fellowship

Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust is offering an exciting Trust Fellowship in Paediatric Cardiology for doctors wishing to develop advanced clinical experience in one of the most respected paediatric cardiac centres in the UK.

This role provides the opportunity to work in a large and highly specialised cardiac unit that manages a wide range of congenital and acquired heart conditions in children.

Doctors appointed to this fellowship will gain exposure to several subspecialties within paediatric cardiology, including:

  • Advanced heart failure management
  • Paediatric cardiac transplantation
  • Pulmonary Hypertension
  • Inherited Cardiovascular Diseases

Clinical Responsibilities

The Trust Fellow will play an active role in delivering cardiology services within the hospital and will work at middle-grade level alongside specialty registrars.

Typical responsibilities include:

  • Participating in ward rounds and daily patient reviews
  • Managing post-operative paediatric cardiac patients
  • Supporting inpatient and outpatient cardiology services
  • Performing and interpreting diagnostic investigations under supervision
  • Specific duties may vary depending on the fellow’s experience and interests.

Clinical Training Opportunities

The fellowship provides practical training across multiple aspects of paediatric cardiology.

Doctors in this role may gain experience in:

  • Echocardiography
  • Electrocardiography and 24-hour ECG monitoring

Essential Qualifications

Applicants must have:

  • Primary medical qualification (MBBS or equivalent)
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with licence to practise

Applicants may alternatively provide:

  • IELTS score of 7.5 overall or
  • Occupational English Test (OET) with grade B in each domain

In addition, candidates must hold one of the following postgraduate qualifications:

  • MRCP
  • MRCPCH

Desirable Qualifications

Additional qualifications that may strengthen an application include:

  • Higher academic degree such as MSc or MPhil in a related field.

Required Clinical Experience

Applicants should demonstrate:

  • Experience in paediatric cardiology, particularly echocardiography
  • Previous work as a paediatric cardiology registrar or SHO
  • Knowledge of clinical governance and patient safety
  • Participation in clinical audit or quality improvement projects
  • Evidence of consistent career progression within clinical roles

Desirable Experience

Preferred candidates may also have:

  • Experience in teaching or presenting educational sessions
  • Publications in peer-reviewed medical journals
  • At least one year of paediatric clinical experience, including six months in neonatal care
