Role Overview

Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust is offering a General Paediatric Trust Fellow position within the International and Private Care Directorate. This role is aimed at doctors who are nearing completion of their paediatric training and wish to gain further experience in managing complex paediatric cases within a specialist tertiary centre.

The post provides an excellent opportunity to work with a diverse international patient population and develop clinical expertise in a highly specialised paediatric hospital. Fellows will gain valuable middle-grade experience while working alongside expert consultants and multidisciplinary teams.

The International and Private Care Directorate at GOSH is internationally recognised for delivering advanced treatment to children with complex medical conditions while also supporting the education and development of paediatric professionals.

Key Responsibilities

The Trust Fellow will play a central role in delivering high-quality paediatric care to patients across several wards, including:

  • Bumblebee Ward
  • Hedgehog Ward
  • Butterfly Ward
  • Caterpillar Ward

Responsibilities include:

  • Assessing and managing children admitted with a wide range of medical conditions.
  • Providing care for international, private, and NHS patients.
  • Working closely with specialist consultants and paediatric teams to ensure comprehensive care.
  • Participating in ward rounds, patient reviews and multidisciplinary discussions.
  • Supporting junior medical staff and collaborating with nursing teams.
  • Maintaining accurate clinical documentation and contributing to quality improvement initiatives.

Working Schedule

The role operates on a full shift rota, including day and night duties.

Typical schedule:

  • Daytime shifts between 07:30 and 21:00 covering the inpatient wards.
  • Standard weekday hours typically 08:30 – 17:30.
  • Weekend rota approximately 1 in 3.5 weekends.
  • Night shifts 20:00 – 09:00 covering paediatric gastroenterology, metabolic medicine and endocrinology services (approximately 1 in 13 frequency).
  • This rota follows the NHS Junior Doctors Terms and Conditions of Service and complies with the European Working Time Directive.
  • Annual leave and study leave are supported through prospective rota planning and must normally be requested at least six weeks in advance.

Essential Qualifications

Applicants must demonstrate:

  • A primary medical degree (MBBS or equivalent).
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with licence to practise by the start date.
  • MRCPCH Part 2 (or equivalent qualification).
  • Certification in paediatric life-support training such as EPALS, APLS or NALS.
  • Evidence of English language proficiency where required (for example IELTS Academic overall score 7.5).

Essential Clinical Experience

Candidates should have:

  • At least two years of paediatric training in recognised posts or equivalent post-registration paediatric experience.
  • A minimum of six months’ experience in neonatal intensive care.
  • Previous experience working within the NHS or a comparable healthcare system.

Desirable Experience

The following would be advantageous:

  • Subspecialty paediatric training experience (approximately 12 months).
  • Experience in Paediatric Intensive Care Units (PICU).
  • Participation in clinical research or academic publications.
  • Involvement in clinical audit or quality improvement projects.
  • Leadership or management experience in healthcare settings.
  • Teaching experience with junior doctors or nursing staff.

Core Skills and Competencies

The successful applicant should demonstrate:

  • Confidence in the assessment and management of sick children.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills when working with families and colleagues.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

Competence in essential clinical procedures, including:

  • Venepuncture
  • Cannulation
  • Lumbar puncture
  • Ability to supervise or support junior medical staff where required.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise clinical workload.
  • Familiarity with hospital IT systems and digital documentation.
