About the Role
Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist to join the Mildred Creak Unit (MCU) within the Psychological and Mental Health Services team.
This established position offers an opportunity to work at one of the world’s leading specialist children’s hospitals. The successful candidate will serve as the clinical lead and consultant psychiatrist for the inpatient mental health unit supporting children aged 7 to 14 years with complex psychiatric conditions.
The Mildred Creak Unit provides specialist care for young patients with severe mental health needs, including eating disorders, psychosomatic conditions and other complex psychiatric presentations. The consultant will oversee patient care, lead multidisciplinary collaboration and support training for junior doctors.
Key Responsibilities
The postholder will provide clinical leadership and psychiatric expertise within the Mildred Creak Unit.
Core duties include:
- Leading the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of children admitted to the unit.
- Overseeing care for up to 10 patients (8 inpatients and 2 day-patients).
Managing complex cases involving conditions such as:
- Eating disorders
- Mood and anxiety disorders
- Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
- Severe obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
- Early-onset psychosis
Psychosomatic and functional presentations
- Chairing weekly ward rounds and clinical review meetings.
- Coordinating Care Programme Approach (CPA) and network meetings.
- Managing referrals to the Mildred Creak Unit.
- Participating in weekly referral discussions with NHS England.
- Leading a fortnightly internal referral review meeting.
Leadership and Team Collaboration
The consultant psychiatrist will work closely with a highly experienced multidisciplinary team, which may include:
- Psychologists
- Nurses
- Therapists
- Social workers
- Junior and higher trainee doctors
The postholder will also:
- Supervise both Core Trainees and Higher Trainees.
- Contribute to staff development and professional training.
- Promote high standards of patient safety and clinical governance.

Essential Qualifications
Applicants must demonstrate:
- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a valid licence to practise.
- Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) or equivalent.
- Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT/CCST) in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry or expected within six months.
- Eligibility for CESR where applicable.
- Section 12 approval under the Mental Health Act.
Desirable Qualifications
Additional qualifications that would strengthen an application include:
- A higher academic degree such as PhD or MD.
- A recognised teaching qualification.
- Leadership or management training.
Essential Experience
Candidates should have:
- Specialist clinical experience in autism spectrum disorder and associated conditions.
- Experience teaching students and multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
- Participation in clinical audit and quality improvement initiatives.
- Understanding of clinical governance and patient safety frameworks.
Desirable Experience
Preferred experience may include:
- Published research in peer-reviewed journals.
- Participation in clinical research trials.
- Experience working in shared care models or clinical networks.
- Leadership or service development experience.
