Overview of the Role

An exciting opportunity is available for a Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist to join a multidisciplinary mental health team providing specialist care for older adults. The role is primarily community-based and focuses on supporting patients who present with complex mental health conditions, including functional psychiatric disorders and memory-related difficulties.

The successful candidate will play an important role in assessing, diagnosing, and managing older adults with conditions such as dementia and other psychiatric illnesses. In collaboration with senior clinical colleagues, the post holder will also help shape and improve clinical care pathways for older adults with functional mental health disorders.

This position offers the opportunity to influence service development, strengthen community-based mental health support, and contribute to improving the quality of life for older adults within the region.

Key Responsibilities

The Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist will work closely with a multidisciplinary team and provide clinical leadership across several services.

Clinical Care and Patient Management

  • Conduct specialist psychiatric assessments for older adults with complex functional mental illnesses and memory disorders.
  • Diagnose and manage conditions including dementia and associated psychiatric symptoms.
  • Provide treatment planning and long-term management for patients receiving community mental health services.
  • Deliver statutory clinical reports when required.

Service Development

  • Lead the development and implementation of integrated care pathways for older adults experiencing mental health difficulties.
  • Support improvements within the Memory Service and functional illness pathway.
  • Promote collaboration across community services and partner organisations.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration

  • Work alongside psychologists, nurses, social workers, and therapists to deliver comprehensive patient care.
  • Provide clinical consultation to the Duty and Outreach Teams (DOT) and Home Treatment Services when necessary.

Clinical Leadership and Supervision

  • Provide supervision, mentoring, and support for members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Ensure high standards in risk assessment and psychiatric evaluations.
  • Work closely with the Lead Consultant Psychiatrist and service management team to maintain quality standards.

Legal and Professional Duties

Undertake responsibilities as a Section 12 Approved Doctor and Approved Clinician under the Mental Health Act 1983.

Salary and Employment Details

  • Pay Scale: Hospital Medical and Dental – Consultant Grade
  • Annual Salary: £99,532 – £131,964 depending on experience
  • Contract: Permanent
  • Working Pattern: Full-time with flexible working arrangements available

Applicants must meet the following professional and regulatory criteria:

Essential Qualifications

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise
  • Membership of the **Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych)
  • Section 12 Approval under the Mental Health Act
