The collaboration currently includes ten partner universities:

  • University of Essex
  • University of Hull
  • Keele University
  • The Open University

Over time, ResearchPlus aims to grow by welcoming additional institutions that share its vision and research strengths.

The Role

ResearchPlus is seeking its first Director, who will play a central role in establishing and guiding the organisation’s strategic direction.

In this position, you will provide policy leadership, organisational management, and external representation. Your work will help position ResearchPlus as a trusted and influential voice within discussions about higher education, research policy, and innovation in the UK.

The Director will report directly to the ResearchPlus co-chairs, currently the Vice-Chancellors of Brunel University London and the University of Sussex. As the organisation’s founding staff member, you will shape its operational structure and help build a small but effective team over time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establish the organisation as a credible and respected contributor to national policy discussions.
  • Provide insight and analysis on developments affecting the UK research and higher education sectors.

  • Promote the interests, strengths, and contributions of member universities.
  • Develop policy briefings, reports, and communications that inform decision-making.

Operational Management

  • Oversee the day-to-day running of ResearchPlus.
  • Manage organisational planning, budgeting, and reporting.
  • Support the governance arrangements agreed by the partner universities.
  • Collaboration and Partnership Building
  • Work closely with senior leaders across the partner institutions.
  • Build consensus among universities with distinct priorities and identities.
  • Foster a shared sense of purpose within the collaboration.

About You

The successful candidate will bring both strategic insight and strong leadership skills, along with a clear understanding of the higher education policy environment.

You should demonstrate:

  • Strong organisational and planning capabilities.
  • A well-developed interest in higher education, research policy, and innovation systems.
  • Experience analysing policy developments and translating insights into practical actions.
  • Excellent communication and advocacy skills.
  • The ability to identify opportunities and develop initiatives that create impact.
  • A collaborative leadership style suited to working across multiple institutions.
