Overview of the Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist to join the North Yorkshire and York CAMHS Crisis Team. This service supports children and young people under 18 experiencing acute mental health crises, providing round-the-clock (24/7) support to young people and their families.

We are seeking a motivated and innovative clinical leader who is passionate about improving mental health care for young people. The successful candidate will help guide clinical practice, support colleagues, and contribute to the continued development of crisis services within the region.

The role is primarily Monday to Friday, with occasional weekend work. Although the post is based in York, the position requires travel across the wider locality to support clinical teams where demand is highest.

Applicants must therefore be able to travel independently and have access to a vehicle suitable for work purposes. Mileage expenses incurred during work hours can be claimed, and team pool vehicles may also be available.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership

As a Clinical Nurse Specialist, you will:

  • Provide clinical leadership during crisis service shifts
  • Support the coordination of clinicians across the locality
  • Offer professional guidance to junior staff
  • Work closely with the Team Manager and other Clinical Nurse Specialists
  • You will help ensure that high-quality, consistent mental health care is delivered across the service.
  • Crisis Assessment and Risk Management
  • The role requires strong expertise in mental health crisis assessment and intervention.

You will:

  • Carry out comprehensive psychosocial assessments
  • Conduct clinical risk assessments
  • Develop and implement robust safety plans
  • Provide clinical decision-making in high-risk situations
  • Your work will help reduce risks and support young people safely through periods of crisis.
  • Partnership and Multi-Agency Working
  • This position requires close collaboration with professionals across healthcare, education, and social care.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Communicating effectively with young people and families
  • Participating in multi-agency meetings
  • Supporting partner organisations with specialist mental health advice
  • Promoting coordinated care for young people with complex needs

Clinical Governance and Service Development

In this leadership role, you will support quality improvement and service development through:

  • Clinical audit and evaluation
  • Identifying examples of good practice
  • Sharing learning with staff and leadership teams
  • Promoting transparency and continuous improvement
  • You will also contribute to clinical supervision, ensuring that staff maintain professional standards and develop their clinical skills.

Essential Qualifications

Applicants must hold:

Current professional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)

Registration as one of the following:

  • Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN)
  • Registered Learning Disability Nurse (RNLD)
  • Registered General Nurse (RGN)
  • Registered Sick Children’s Nurse (RNSC – CAMHS only)

Additional requirements include:

  • Practice Assessor or Practice Supervisor qualification (or willingness to obtain)
  • Training in Clinical Supervision
  • Postgraduate diploma in a relevant field, or willingness to work towards one within two years

Qualification or training in a recognised psychological therapy such as:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Systemic Family Therapy (SFT)
  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
  • Non-Medical Prescribing (NMP)

Essential Experience

Candidates should have:

  • Minimum two years’ experience at Band 6 level, preferably within CAMHS
  • Experience supporting individuals with complex mental health needs
  • Experience working with patients who present significant risk behaviours
  • Strong background in clinical risk assessment and management
  • Experience working within multi-disciplinary teams
  • Involvement in quality improvement initiatives

Knowledge Requirements

Applicants should demonstrate knowledge of:

Relevant UK legislation including:

  • Mental Health Act
  • Mental Capacity Act
  • Children Act
  • Safeguarding policies

DBS and Safeguarding Checks

This role requires an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check due to the nature of the work with children and vulnerable individuals.

Skilled Worker Visa Sponsorship

Applications from candidates who require Skilled Worker visa sponsorship are welcome and will be considered where the role meets eligibility requirements.

Applicants from overseas may also need to provide criminal record certificates from countries where they have lived for 12 months or more in the past 10 years.
