Role Overview

Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust is offering an exciting Band 5–6 development opportunity within the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) Crisis Team covering North Yorkshire, York and Selby.

This position is designed to support a Band 5 nurse in progressing to Band 6 by completing a structured competency programme. Once the required competencies and development milestones are achieved, the successful candidate will transition into a permanent Band 6 CAMHS Crisis Clinician role.

The role focuses on providing rapid mental health assessment and crisis intervention for children and young people, helping them access timely support during periods of acute psychological distress.

Working Locations

  • The CAMHS Crisis Team operates across multiple clinical sites. Successful applicants may be required to work at:
  • Foss Park Hospital – York
  • Cross Lane Hospital – Scarborough
  • The Orchards – Ripon
  • The service operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including weekends and public holidays.

Key Responsibilities

As a CAMHS Crisis Clinician, you will play an important role in supporting young people experiencing urgent mental health difficulties. Duties include:

  • Conducting urgent mental health assessments for children and adolescents in crisis
  • Delivering evidence-based interventions and therapeutic support
  • Working closely with families, carers, and safeguarding teams
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary professionals and partner agencies
  • Contributing to clinical risk assessments and crisis management plans
  • Participating in ongoing service development and quality improvement initiatives
  • Supporting young people through recovery and ensuring safe care planning
  • Guidance on mental health services in England

Essential Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Current professional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (RNMH, RNLD or relevant CAMHS pathway)
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • Completion of a recognised preceptorship programme
  • Willingness to undertake mentorship or assessor training
  • More information about registering as a nurse in the UK

Candidates should demonstrate experience in:

  • Supporting individuals with mental health conditions or learning disabilities
  • Working within person-centred care environments
  • Collaborating with service users, families, and carers
  • Working effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team
  • Partnering with external agencies such as education, safeguarding services, and community organisations

Knowledge and Skills

Applicants should have knowledge of:

  • Evidence-based approaches to mental health care
  • Safeguarding procedures and responsibilities
  • Risk assessment and clinical risk management
  • Clinical governance standards
  • Relevant legislation including:
