Role Overview

Dorking Healthcare Ltd is seeking a skilled and motivated Advanced Sonographer to join its expanding community ultrasound service. This role provides an opportunity to work across GP practices and community hospitals, delivering high-quality non-obstetric ultrasound examinations as part of a collaborative multidisciplinary healthcare team.

The post holder will operate with a high level of professional autonomy, independently performing ultrasound scans, producing diagnostic reports, and contributing to clinical decision-making within the patient care pathway. The role is mobile in nature and involves working across several community sites in Surrey.

This is an exciting time to join the service, as the organisation has recently launched a Musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound service, with plans to develop image-guided joint injection services in the future.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

The Advanced Sonographer will:

• Conduct a wide range of diagnostic ultrasound examinations in accordance with professional guidelines
• Work independently during scanning sessions and produce clear, clinically accurate diagnostic reports
• Record and store diagnostic images using the PACS imaging system
• Interpret ultrasound findings and determine whether further imaging or specialist referral is required
• Provide safe and supportive patient care throughout the examination process

Patient Care and Communication

The role requires strong communication skills and compassionate patient interaction. Responsibilities include:

• Explaining procedures and answering patient questions prior to scanning
• Communicating findings appropriately within agreed clinical protocols
• Working closely with referring clinicians to support patient management decisions
• Ensuring patients feel comfortable and informed throughout their diagnostic journey

Service Delivery and Operational Responsibilities

The successful candidate will also contribute to the efficient operation of the ultrasound service by:

• Managing their own ultrasound clinics and appointment schedules
• Coordinating effectively with local clinical teams at each site
• Ensuring equipment is used safely and maintained appropriately
• Supporting stock management and reporting technical issues when necessary
• Participating in staff meetings and departmental development initiatives

Education and Service Development

The role includes opportunities to support education and professional development by:

• Assisting in the training of radiographers, medical staff, and ultrasound trainees

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

Applicants must hold:

• A recognised ultrasound qualification such as DMU, PgD, or MSc in Medical Ultrasound
• Current registration with the Health and Care Professions Council or an equivalent professional body
• Evidence of ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
• A valid UK driving licence with access to a vehicle due to the mobile nature of the role
• Demonstrated experience performing ultrasound examinations within the UK healthcare system
