About the Fellowship

An excellent opportunity is available for a Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Colorectal Surgery through a collaborative programme between Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

This Royal College–approved fellowship offers advanced specialist training in paediatric colorectal surgery across two leading UK centres. The successful candidate will spend one year at each institution, gaining extensive exposure to complex paediatric surgical conditions while developing both clinical and academic expertise.

The programme is particularly suitable for post-CCT surgeons or international fellows who wish to further specialise in paediatric colorectal surgery.

Fellowship Overview

During the fellowship, the postholder will gain hands-on surgical and multidisciplinary experience managing complex colorectal conditions in children.

Surgical Experience

The fellow will participate in procedures including:

  • Reconstruction for ano-rectal malformations in male and female patients
  • Surgical correction of cloacal malformations
  • Procedures for Hirschsprung’s disease
  • Therapeutic and reconstructive surgery for Inflammatory bowel disease in children
  • Management of **Intestinal pseudo‑obstruction and complex intestinal dysmotility disorders
  • These cases will provide exposure to highly specialised surgical techniques and long-term multidisciplinary care pathways.

Multidisciplinary Clinical Practice

The fellowship includes participation in specialist multidisciplinary team (MDT) clinics, working closely with paediatric surgeons, specialist nurses, gastroenterologists, and allied health professionals.

Clinics focus on conditions such as:

  • Cloacal malformations
  • Paediatric inflammatory bowel disease
  • Intestinal dysmotility and chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction
  • This collaborative approach ensures that children and their families receive comprehensive, coordinated care.
  • Research and Academic Development

The programme encourages fellows to contribute actively to academic work and service improvement.

During the fellowship, the postholder will:

  • Lead a clinical research project, expected to result in presentation at an international conference and publication as first author
  • Complete a quality improvement initiative
  • Update educational and patient information materials relating to paediatric colorectal disorders
  • Collaborate with specialist nursing teams to develop and refine clinical care protocols

Essential Requirements

Qualifications

Applicants must have:

  • MBBS or equivalent medical degree
  • Fellowship qualification such as FRCS (Paediatric Surgery) or equivalent
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council by the start date
  • Evidence of specialist paediatric surgical training
  • IELTS certification if required for visa purposes

Experience

Candidates should demonstrate:

  • Experience in paediatric surgical practice
  • Knowledge of paediatric colorectal conditions
  • Previous involvement in clinical research or audit
  • Ability to apply research findings to clinical practice

  • Strong clinical judgement in managing paediatric surgical conditions

Desirable Experience

  • The following would be advantageous:
  • Quality improvement project involvement
  • Teaching or mentoring experience
  • Training in child protection or paediatric life support (APLS)
  • Strong presentation and academic communication skills

Pre-Employment Requirements

This role requires a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check under the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 exceptions for healthcare roles.

Applicants requiring sponsorship must meet the eligibility requirements for the UK Skilled Worker visa.
