About the Role

Great Ormond Street Hospital is seeking an experienced Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist to join the Mildred Creak Unit (MCU) within the Psychological and Mental Health Services (PAMHS). This role offers the opportunity to lead clinical care in a specialised inpatient setting dedicated to children aged 7 to 14 years who present with complex mental health conditions.

As the Consultant and service lead for the unit, you will oversee the assessment, treatment, and ongoing care of young patients admitted to the MCU. The unit accommodates up to 10 patients, including both inpatients and day patients who may be transitioning toward discharge.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership

You will take overall clinical responsibility for the care provided within the Mildred Creak Unit. Your role will involve guiding treatment plans, ensuring best practice standards, and supporting clinical decision-making across the team.

Patient Assessment and Treatment

The unit supports children experiencing a wide range of complex psychiatric conditions, including:

  • Eating disorders
  • Severe psychosomatic or functional disorders
  • Mood and anxiety disorders
  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) with co-existing conditions
  • Severe obsessive compulsive disorder
  • Early-onset psychosis

Admissions typically last around five months, although some patients may require longer support depending on clinical need.

Referral Management

You will coordinate the referral pathway for the unit, including reviewing new cases and participating in the weekly NHS England referral meeting. Additionally, you will chair the MCU’s fortnightly referral review meeting.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration

Working alongside psychologists, therapists, nurses, and social care professionals, you will lead regular ward rounds, clinical reviews, and care planning meetings to ensure each patient receives integrated and effective care.

Training and Supervision

A key part of the role involves supporting medical education by supervising core trainees and higher trainee doctors assigned to the unit.

Essential Qualifications and Registration

Applicants must meet the following professional requirements:

  • GMC Specialist Registration with Licence to Practise
  • MRCPsych qualification (or equivalent)
  • CCT/CCST in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (or within six months of interview)
  • Eligibility for CESR where applicable
  • Section 12 approval

Candidates must also hold appropriate UK professional registration and meet the legal standards required for practising medicine in the UK.

Experience and Knowledge Required

Successful candidates should demonstrate:

  • Expertise in assessing and treating autism and related conditions
  • Experience teaching medical students or multidisciplinary teams
  • Participation in clinical audits and service improvement projects
  • Understanding of clinical governance and patient safety standards
  • Additional experience in research, clinical leadership, or academic work will be considered advantageous.
