Overview of the Position
The Department of History at the University of Sussex invites applications for a fixed-term Assistant Professor specialising in European History from 1500 onwards, excluding the history of the British Isles.

Key Teaching and Academic Responsibilities
The appointed academic will play an active role in teaching, mentoring students, and contributing to curriculum development. Responsibilities are expected to include:
Delivering lectures and seminar teaching in undergraduate history modules.
Contributing to modules such as:
- The Early Modern World
- The Making of the Modern World
- Ideas of History
- History of Emotions
- Supervising undergraduate dissertations and supporting students in their academic development.
- Marking assessments and providing constructive feedback.
- Potentially contributing to teaching within the MA History programme.
- Participating in departmental activities and collaborative research culture.
Candidate Profile
Applicants should demonstrate both subject expertise and a commitment to high-quality teaching.
Essential requirements include:
- A PhD in European History (post-1500) excluding the history of the British Isles.
- Experience teaching within the UK Higher Education sector.
- Strong communication and presentation skills.
- Evidence of an emerging research profile and developing publication record.
- Ability to support and mentor undergraduate students effectively.
- Willingness to work collaboratively within a collegial academic department.
Desirable expertise may include:
- Global or transnational approaches to early modern or modern European history.
- Research focusing on histories of emotion.
- Experience supervising undergraduate dissertations.
