Lead Compassionate Inpatient Care for Older Adults

An opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Psychiatrist in Older Persons Mental Health to join the inpatient team based at Gosport War Memorial Hospital. This role combines Responsible Clinician (RC) duties, senior clinical leadership, and service development within a supportive and evolving organisation.

As part of our commitment to attracting exceptional consultants, eligible candidates will receive a £30,000 Golden Hello payment.

You will work alongside a part-time Consultant, three Resident Doctors, and a Middle Grade Doctor within a collaborative multidisciplinary team providing specialist inpatient care for older adults.

Your Role and Responsibilities

This position involves clinical leadership across two inpatient areas, with primary RC responsibility for patients on Rose Ward while also contributing across the wider ward environment.

Clinical Duties

  • Provide consultant-led psychiatric care for older adult inpatients.
  • Act as Responsible Clinician under the Mental Health Act.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments, care planning, and reviews.
  • Support safe discharge planning and continuity of care.

Leadership & Governance

  • Promote high standards of patient safety and quality improvement.
  • Participate fully in clinical governance, audit, and service planning.
  • Contribute to local academic meetings and educational activities.
  • Support transparent communication and collaborative decision-making within the team.

Team Collaboration

Consultants within the Trust are expected to:

  • Ensure clarity of professional roles and accountability within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Foster open discussion of patient safety concerns.
  • Encourage inclusive team participation in decision-making.
  • Maintain effective communication both within and beyond the ward team.

Essential Criteria

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council.
  • MRCPsych (or recognised equivalent qualification).
  • Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register, or within six months of CCT at interview.
  • CCT in Older Persons Psychiatry.
  • Section 12(2) approval under the Mental Health Act 1983.
