Join a Growing Neurology Service in Somerset

An opportunity has arisen for two Consultant Neurologists to become part of an expanding and forward-looking neurology department in Somerset. This role offers the autonomy to practise as a general neurologist while building or strengthening a subspecialty interest aligned with your expertise.

Applicants from all neurology subspecialties are encouraged to apply. An interest in epilepsy would be particularly valued, though this is not essential.

Relocation support and Skilled Worker visa sponsorship may be available for eligible candidates.

The Role

As a Consultant Neurologist, you will:

  • Deliver comprehensive general neurology services across Somerset.
  • Develop and lead a subspecialist pathway reflecting your clinical interests.
  • Provide outpatient clinics at multiple hospital sites.
  • Support inpatient neurology at Musgrove Park Hospital, including ward referrals.
  • Participate in the duty neurologist rota (inpatient-focused weeks with no outpatient commitments).
  • Contribute to teaching, audit, and research activities.
  • Engage with clinical trials supported by the Clinical Research Network.

Neurosurgical and interventional neuroradiology services are provided via established links with Southmead Hospital, ensuring seamless tertiary collaboration.

The Team & Infrastructure

You will join:

  • Six substantive consultant neurologists.
  • An expanding registrar workforce (increasing to two registrars).

A well-established multidisciplinary team including:

  • Headache practitioners
  • Epilepsy nurse specialists
  • Multiple sclerosis nurse specialists
  • Neuro-pharmacist
  • Consultant physiotherapist
  • Clinical psychologists

The department holds regular academic meetings and participates in a virtual neuroradiology MDT. Consultants are supported with dedicated office space, full IT provision, and comprehensive secretarial assistance.

What We’re Looking For

Essential

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council with licence to practise.
  • CCT in Neurology (or within six months of completion at interview).
  • Ability to work independently as a general neurologist.
  • Commitment to patient-centred care and collaborative practice.
  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit.
  • Capacity to lead and develop a clinical service area.
  • Strong organisational and prioritisation skills.

Desirable

  • Subspecialty expertise (epilepsy particularly welcomed).
  • Experience in research and medical education.
  • Understanding of NHS governance, service planning, and resource management.
  • Demonstrated impact through quality improvement initiatives.
