A Meaningful Psychiatry Role in a Close-Knit Island Service

We are seeking a dedicated Specialty Doctor to join Mental Health Services on the Isle of Wight. This is a substantive position within a well-established multidisciplinary team delivering high-quality, person-centred care to working-age and older adults across both community and inpatient settings.

The Role at a Glance

You will:

  • Manage a varied caseload across inpatient and outpatient services.
  • Provide medical input for secondary care patients experiencing mental illness.
  • Work closely with nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists and social care professionals.
  • Deliver care under the supervision and support of a Consultant Psychiatrist.
  • Contribute to clinical governance, audit, and service improvement initiatives.
  • Support safe and effective care under the Mental Health Act (MHA) and Mental Capacity Act (MCA).

While the post may occasionally require flexibility during emergencies or unforeseen circumstances, such instances are exceptional and time off in lieu may be granted in accordance with Trust policy.

Clinical Scope

The role spans the full range of adult mental health services within the Trust, including:

  • Community mental health services
  • Acute and rehabilitation inpatient wards
  • Early intervention and crisis pathways
  • Older adult mental health services

The Trust also delivers specialist inpatient services in forensic, eating disorder, and learning disability settings.

Essential Requirements

Qualifications

  • Recognised primary medical qualification (MBBS or equivalent).
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council with licence to practise.

Experience

Minimum four years’ full-time postgraduate training (or equivalent), including at least two years in a psychiatry specialty training programme.

  • Previous experience in psychiatry.
  • Strong clinical skills using a biopsychosocial model.
  • Ability to manage clinical complexity and risk.
  • Competence in fulfilling duties under the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act.
  • Effective communication skills in written and spoken English.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.

Desirable

  • MRCPsych qualification.
  • Section 12(2) approval under the Mental Health Act.
  • Experience in crisis, inpatient, community or liaison psychiatry.
  • Evidence of involvement in service development or quality improvement.
