Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is expanding its Neurology Service and is seeking two forward-thinking Consultant Neurologists to join a progressive and collaborative department. This is an opportunity to practise broad-based general neurology while developing a specialist interest aligned with your expertise.

We welcome applications from all subspecialties, with a particular interest in epilepsy. The successful candidates will help strengthen specialist pathways and contribute to the strategic development of neurology services across the county.

The Neurology team currently includes:

  • 6 substantive consultants
  • An expanding registrar workforce
  • Specialist multidisciplinary colleagues including epilepsy and MS nurse specialists, headache practitioners, neuro-pharmacist, consultant physiotherapist and clinical psychologists
  • Established links with Southmead Hospital for neurosurgery and interventional neuroradiology
  • Weekly academic and neuroradiology MDT meetings
  • Comprehensive administrative, IT and office support is provided. Relocation support may be available for suitable candidates.

Role Overview

You will divide your time between outpatient services across Somerset and inpatient neurology care at Musgrove Park Hospital. During duty weeks, outpatient commitments are paused to allow full focus on inpatient responsibilities.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Delivering comprehensive general neurology services
  • Establishing and leading a subspecialty pathway (epilepsy desirable)
  • Managing ward referrals and inpatient neurology consultations
  • Contributing to service innovation and pathway redesign
  • Engaging in teaching, clinical audit and research activity
  • Participating in the Consultant duty rota

Candidate Profile

Essential Requirements

  • Full registration with General Medical Council and licence to practise
  • CCT in Neurology (or within six months of completion at interview)
  • Demonstrated ability to practise independently as a general neurologist
  • Experience in audit and clinical governance
  • Strong organisational and leadership skills

Desirable Attributes

  • Recognised subspecialty interest (epilepsy particularly welcomed)
  • Teaching and research involvement
  • Understanding of NHS structures, governance and resource management
  • Experience contributing to committees or service development initiatives
