If you have NHS experience and are exploring a long-term career in child health or paediatric surgery—but are not yet ready to commit to a formal run-through training programme—this fellowship offers a valuable stepping stone.

These ST1/ST2 equivalent Trust Fellow posts provide structured surgical exposure within a highly specialised paediatric environment. You will work alongside nationally recognised surgical teams managing children with complex, multi-system conditions, while benefiting from a formal Level 1 teaching programme delivered in partnership with the London School of Paediatrics.

What This Fellowship Offers

Over 12 months, you will rotate across 1–2 specialist surgical areas (guided by your preference at interview), gaining concentrated experience in:

  • Specialist Neonatal & Paediatric Surgery
  • Paediatric Urology
  • Paediatric ENT
  • Paediatric Plastic Surgery
  • Paediatric Orthopaedics

The majority of your time will be spent within your allocated specialty, with cross-cover responsibilities when required to ensure safe service delivery.

This post combines hands-on clinical exposure with academic opportunity, including participation in research, audit, and postgraduate courses within and beyond the Trust.

Clinical Responsibilities

As a Trust Fellow, your role will include:

Ward & Inpatient Care

  • Managing elective admissions from pre-operative preparation through post-operative recovery
  • Coordinating multidisciplinary inpatient care
  • Monitoring and escalating concerns appropriately
  • Theatre & Procedural Experience
  • Assisting during operating lists
  • Developing technical and perioperative skills under consultant supervision

Participating in emergency surgical admissions (note: the Trust does not operate an A&E department, though emergency surgical cases occur regularly)

Outpatient & Academic Development

You will receive educational supervision from both surgical and general paediatric consultants, ensuring robust clinical support throughout the year.

  • Have completed Foundation Training or Core Training (or equivalent)
  • Have prior NHS experience

Essential Requirements

  • Primary Medical Qualification (MBBS or equivalent)
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) by the designated start date
  • Minimum 3 months’ clinical experience in Surgery or Paediatrics at Foundation/ST/SHO level (clinical attachments do not qualify)
  • Ability to prioritise clinical workload effectively
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in audit and teaching

Desirable Qualifications

  • MRCS or MRCPCH
  • Clinical exposure to paediatric surgical specialties
  • Peer-reviewed publications
