About the Department

This role is based at the UCL Institute of Archaeology, one of the largest and most internationally respected archaeology departments in the UK. The Institute is known for its global research footprint, spanning five continents, and for its strength in archaeological science, conservation, and heritage studies. It also houses one of the world’s most comprehensive archaeology libraries.

The post works in close collaboration with UCL Anthropology, a leading department recognised for excellence in Social Anthropology, Evolutionary and Environmental Anthropology, Medical Anthropology, and Material Culture studies.

Both departments are part of University College London, widely known as London’s Global University.

Why This Role Matters

We are seeking a Lecturer (Teaching) to act as Degree Coordinator and Personal Tutor for the BA Archaeology & Anthropology programme.

This is more than a teaching position — it is a leadership role in shaping an interdisciplinary undergraduate degree that bridges archaeology and anthropology in innovative and intellectually ambitious ways.

The appointment provides academic cover during the research leave of David Wengrow, who will be undertaking a Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship.

What You Will Be Doing

You will:

  • Coordinate and oversee the BA Archaeology & Anthropology degree
  • Deliver high-quality undergraduate teaching in social anthropology and social theory
  • Support and mentor students through academic tutoring
  • Contribute to assessment, marking, curriculum planning, and academic administration
  • Work collaboratively across departments to ensure a cohesive interdisciplinary student experience
  • This is a full-time post (36.5 hours per week), including preparation, delivery, assessment, and pastoral responsibilities.

The Academic Profile We Are Looking For

Applicants must hold:

  • A PhD in Archaeology or Anthropology

You should be able to teach:

  • Social anthropology
  • Social theory
  • Broad themes connecting world history, archaeology, human evolution/biology, and material culture
  • We welcome scholars whose work cuts across disciplinary boundaries and engages with large-scale questions about the development of human societies.
  • There are no restrictions on research specialism, but intellectual breadth and interdisciplinary engagement will be highly valued.
