About the Role

We are seeking a compassionate and experienced Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist to join the Waltham Forest CAMHS Community Team. This is a substantive part-time post (7 PAs) offering the opportunity to provide senior clinical leadership within a well-established multidisciplinary service supporting children, young people, and their families.

You will work across the Access and Comprehensive CAMHS pathways, contributing expert psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and risk management. This role combines high-quality clinical care with collaborative leadership and partnership working across health, education, and social care networks.

Your Clinical Contribution

As Consultant Psychiatrist, you will:

  • Lead on complex psychiatric assessments, formulation, and diagnosis for children and adolescents.
  • Develop holistic treatment plans that reflect biological, psychological, and social perspectives.
  • Prescribe and review medication in line with national standards and best practice guidance.
  • Provide senior input for young people presenting with high-risk or complex needs.
  • Work closely with families, ensuring care is collaborative, respectful, and empowering.
  • Support safe clinical decision-making and robust risk management within the team.

Leadership & System Working

Beyond clinical expertise, this role carries senior medical leadership responsibilities. You will:

  • Provide clinical leadership within the multidisciplinary team (MDT).
  • Contribute to service development and quality improvement.
  • Work collaboratively with partner agencies including education services, safeguarding teams, social care, and acute hospitals.
  • Support implementation of NHS strategic priorities and governance standards.

On-Call Responsibilities

The postholder will participate in the Senior Psychiatrist on-call rota (currently 1:12) covering evenings and weekends across NELFT mental health services. The rota includes community and inpatient CAMHS consultants and attracts a Category A supplement (subject to change).

Professional Accountability

You will practise as an autonomous Consultant Psychiatrist, accountable for your clinical decisions in accordance with:

  • The General Medical Council (GMC) standards for good medical practice
  • Trust policies and clinical governance frameworks
  • National safeguarding and mental health legislation
  •  GMC – Good Medical Practice

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

  • MRCPsych (or recognised equivalent)
  • Section 12 Approval (or eligibility)
  • Approved Clinician status (or eligibility)
  • Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (or within 6 months of CCT)

Experience & Knowledge

  • Extensive expertise in child and adolescent psychiatry.
  • Strong understanding of biopsychosocial models of care.
  • Experience leading within multidisciplinary systems.
  • Knowledge of NHS clinical governance and safeguarding frameworks.
  • Experience working with diverse cultural communities and interpreters.
