The PELLIS Project

This position sits within the AHRC-funded PELLIS project, which explores the production, circulation, and economic role of leather in the Roman Empire — a vital resource for both civilian and military life, yet poorly understood archaeologically.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Research Fellow in Biomolecular Archaeology to work closely with Professor Rhiannon Stevens and collaborative partners. The successful candidate will support and lead laboratory-based analyses of Roman leather, integrating biomolecular data into broader archaeological interpretations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collecting archaeological samples for biomolecular study.
  • Performing laboratory analyses, including ZooMS (Zooarchaeology by Mass Spectrometry) and stable isotope analysis (carbon, nitrogen and sulfur).
  • Interpreting data and synthesising results with archaeological evidence.
  • Contributing to publications, reports, and outreach activities.
  • Communicating findings to academic and public audiences.
  • The position is offered from 1 March 2026 until 28 February 2029 on a full-time basis (36.5 hours per week).

Candidate Profile

You should have:

  • A PhD (or submission imminent) in Archaeological Science, Archaeology, Biochemistry, or a closely related discipline.
  • Proven laboratory experience with biomolecular techniques (e.g., ZooMS and isotope analysis).
  • A track record of high-quality research outputs appropriate to career stage.
  • A strong interest in Roman archaeology and interdisciplinary research.

Please note: Candidates who have not yet been awarded their PhD will be appointed initially at Grade 6B. Upon PhD submission and subsequent confirmation of award, the appointment will be backdated to Grade 7.

Application Instructions

When applying, please include:

  • A full CV (education, employment, skills, publications, and referees).
  • A cover letter detailing how you meet the essential criteria and person specification.
  • Copies of your qualifications.
  • Refer to the job description and person specification for guidance on structuring your cover letter.
