About the Research Group

The post is based within the UCL Research Department of Respiratory Medicine, led by Dr Rishi Gupta. UCL Respiratory is an internationally recognised centre of excellence, ranking 2nd in Europe for respiratory science, with approximately 85 researchers across 13 specialist groups.

The group focuses on the development, validation, and implementation of novel biomarkers and multivariable models to predict disease progression, clinical outcomes, and responses to therapeutic interventions in respiratory infections. Research combines basic science, computational biology, clinical cohorts, interventional studies, and large-scale data analytics, providing a rich, interdisciplinary environment for early-career researchers.

Role Overview

As a Research Assistant, you will contribute to several impactful projects including:

• Acute Infectious Diseases: Analysing patient data from UK hospital emergency departments to improve treatment strategies.
• Tuberculosis Prevention: Supporting the stratification of preventive treatments and evaluating patient decision aids for therapy choices.
• Mixed Methods Research: Integrating qualitative and quantitative methods to develop personalised treatment approaches.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Conducting data analysis, including statistical evaluation and interpretation
• Critically appraising primary scientific literature
• Supporting grant applications, manuscript preparation, and conference presentations
• Collaborating effectively within a multi-disciplinary team
• This post is full-time, but part-time arrangements may be considered. Note: this role is not eligible for UCL visa sponsorship.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated predoctoral researcher with:

• A Master’s degree in a relevant subject (Biomedical Science, Public Health, Epidemiology, or related fields)
• Familiarity with scientific research methods and statistical data analysis
• Strong critical appraisal, communication, and writing skills
• A commitment to teamwork across disciplines and collaborative research
