About the Academic Setting
This role is based in the UCL Institute of Archaeology — one of the largest and most internationally respected archaeology departments in the UK. Its Heritage Studies section brings together museum professionals, anthropologists, conservators, and cultural heritage scholars to explore how collections, public history, and material culture shape social understanding.
The Institute is widely recognised for leadership in museum practice, conservation, heritage research, and public engagement. Teaching here is strongly interdisciplinary, linking theory with professional practice.
Role Overview
We are appointing a Lecturer (Teaching) in Museum Studies to support postgraduate and undergraduate teaching during a funded research leave period.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Teaching & Academic Delivery
- Teaching core modules on the MA Museum Studies programme
- Supervising postgraduate dissertations
- Co-developing and delivering an undergraduate option module in collaboration with UCL Anthropology
Academic Support & Administration
- Preparing teaching materials and learning resources
- Student advising and feedback
- Coursework assessment and marking
- Participation in programme activities
This appointment provides teaching cover during a research project funded by the Leverhulme Trust and runs for one academic year.
Candidate Profile
We are looking for a scholar-educator with strong engagement in museum and heritage practice.
You should bring:
- A PhD in Museum Studies, Heritage Studies, Anthropology, or a closely related field
- Demonstrable interest in museum practice and heritage debates
- Professional networks within the UK museum sector
- Teaching experience in higher education
- Excellent communication and organisational skills
- Interest in themes such as restitution, colonial legacies, or reparative justice is welcome.
- Visa sponsorship may be available subject to eligibility.
