About the Role and Our Unit

If you are an experienced ACP or ANNP with a strong passion for neonatal care—especially in surgical and complex cases—this could be the perfect next step in your career.

Dolphin Ward is our 10-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, handling around 500 admissions each year. We care for babies across the full range of gestations, starting from as early as 22 weeks. While we’re recognised as a major surgical referral centre providing high-level intensive care, we also manage a diverse mix of complex medical needs. Our patients often require input from multiple specialties, such as oncology, neurology, metabolic conditions, renal issues, ENT, endocrinology, ophthalmology, and respiratory support.

This creates a truly unique environment—one that offers rich opportunities to deepen your expertise in areas of neonatal medicine not commonly encountered in standard NICUs. We welcome applications from talented professionals with backgrounds in various paediatric or neonatal settings. If this sparks your interest, we strongly encourage you to get in touch for an informal conversation to explore the role in more detail.

Key Responsibilities

As an expert practitioner in neonatal intensive care, you’ll:

  • Serve as a clinical role model, delivering consistently high-quality, compassionate patient care while embedding the 6Cs (care, compassion, competence, communication, courage, commitment) and upholding professional standards.
  • Provide independent advanced assessments, initiate treatments, and manage care within your authorised scope of practice, in line with national guidelines, Trust policies, and professional boundaries.
  • Lead by example, demonstrating strong leadership to inspire and guide multidisciplinary teams.
  • Champion evidence-based best practice through participation in regional benchmarking, guideline development, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Drive innovation by fostering enquiry, supporting the growth of advanced roles, and contributing to service transformation projects.
  • Mentor and supervise colleagues (including trainee ACPs, medical trainees, and other professionals) to build competence and confidence across the directorate.
  • Take ownership of your own professional growth through reflective practice, annual appraisals, e-portfolio maintenance, and continuous development.

Working at Great Ormond Street Hospital

We are deeply committed to building a workforce that truly reflects the diverse communities we serve. We particularly welcome applications from individuals from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic backgrounds, those with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. Greater diversity brings richer perspectives and helps us deliver even better care to the children and families who rely on us.

Our Trust actively promotes an inclusive culture through staff networks such as REACH (focusing on race, ethnicity, and cultural heritage), ENABLED (supporting disabilities), PRIDE, and the Women’s Network—each sponsored by a senior leader. We value every voice and strive to ensure everyone feels seen, heard, and respected.
