Overview
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking two motivated Consultant Neurologists to join our expanding department. This is a unique opportunity to work as a general neurologist while developing a subspecialist service aligned with your expertise.
We welcome applicants from all neurology subspecialties, with a special interest in epilepsy particularly desirable. The role offers flexibility across multiple sites, engagement in research and teaching, and the chance to contribute to the strategic development of neurology services in Somerset.
Key Responsibilities
As a Consultant Neurologist, you will:
- Deliver high-quality general neurology services across multiple hospital sites in Somerset.
- Develop and lead a subspecialist service in your area of expertise.
- Provide outpatient and inpatient neurology care, including ward referrals at Musgrove Park Hospital.
- Participate in the duty neurologist rota, ensuring inpatient coverage with no outpatient clinics scheduled during duty weeks.
- Collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team, including specialist nurses, neuro-psychologists, physiotherapists, and pharmacists.
- Contribute to clinical research, teaching, and clinical trials, supported by the Clinical Research Network.
- Engage in service development and quality improvement initiatives.
Department & Facilities
You will join a dynamic and growing neurology department featuring:
- 6 substantive consultants and expanding registrar team
- Specialist MDT including headache practitioners, epilepsy nurse specialists, MS nurse specialists, consultant physiotherapist, and clinical psychologists
- Access to neurosurgery and interventional neuroradiology at Southmead Hospital, Bristol
- Weekly neurology academic meetings and virtual neuroradiology MDTs
- Full administrative support including secretarial and IT services, with dedicated office space
- Relocation support may be available for suitable candidates.
Candidate Requirements
Qualifications
Essential:
- Full GMC registration with a license to practice in the UK
- CCT in Neurology (or within six months of completion at the time of interview)
Desirable:
- Subspecialty expertise (epilepsy preferred)
- Experience in teaching, research, and clinical trials
Experience
Essential:
- Ability to work independently as a general neurologist
- Commitment to multidisciplinary teamwork, patient care, and service development
Desirable:
- Understanding of NHS structures, clinical governance, and financial/resource management
- Experience leading audits and contributing to improved outcomes
Skills & Competencies
- Ability to prioritise clinical needs and organise own workload efficiently
- Strong leadership skills with evidence of service development
- Engagement in clinical audit and quality improvement
- Effective communication and collaboration with a wide range of clinical teams
