Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist to lead and support the Adult Mental Health Treatment & Intervention and Early Intervention in Psychosis teams based at Parkside Community Mental Health Centre, Middlesbrough. This leadership post has a strong focus on clinical excellence, collaborative multidisciplinary working and the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based care for people with chronic, complex or severe mental health conditions.

The post holder will actively contribute to medical leadership, clinical governance, supervision of medical and non-medical staff, and personalised care planning. Close partnership working will be expected with nursing, psychology, advanced practitioners, managers and specialist services.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership & Service Delivery

  • Provide proactive, responsive and supportive leadership to the Treatment & Intervention and EIP teams.
  • Participate fully in team huddles, Supercell meetings and multidisciplinary forums that drive care planning and clinical decision-making.
  • Complete comprehensive psychiatric assessments, formulate diagnoses, and create patient-centred treatment plans.
  • Undertake joint reviews for complex, high-risk or clinically unstable patients with other team members.
  • Act as Responsible Clinician where appropriate, including for Community Treatment Orders (CTOs) and Ministry of Justice (MOJ) orders.
  • Provide mental health assessments under the Mental Health Act, including occasional Section 136 assessments.

Supervision & Teaching

  • Provide professional supervision for Specialty and Foundation doctors, non-medical prescribers and junior medical staff.
  • Contribute to ongoing clinical education, training, and reflective learning within the teams.
  • Support quality improvement activities, audits and innovations in care delivery.

On-Call Responsibilities

Participate in the consultant on-call rota (approx. 1 in 18) covering:

  • All Teesside mental health units
  • Crisis Assessment Suite (CAS) at Roseberry Park Hospital
  • Community Mental Health Act assessments
  • Emergency Psychiatric support for acute hospitals

Leadership

Essential

  • Demonstrates reflective practice, resilience and ability to influence service improvement.
  • Can lead positive change within multidisciplinary systems.
  • Familiarity with quality improvement frameworks and lean methodology (or willing to develop).

Desirable

  • Leadership beyond immediate clinical teams.
  • Formal quality improvement or management training.

Academic & Professional Development

Essential

  • Engagement in postgraduate development and clinical teaching.
  • Experience in clinical audit, evaluation or research involvement.

Desirable

  • Track record of education, research or service innovation with outputs (e.g. publications/presentations).

Qualifications

Essential

  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise.

  • Postgraduate qualification such as MRCPsych.
  • Approved Clinician status and Section 12 approval, or ability to achieve within 3 months of appointment.

Clinical Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Strong clinical competence across adult mental health using a bio-psycho-social model.
  • Excellent communication and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to manage complex risk and apply the Mental Capacity Act in practice.

Desirable

Sub-specialist experience relevant to the service.
