Job Description

We are seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist in Older Persons Mental Health (OPMH) to play a pivotal role within our inpatient services at Gosport War Memorial Hospital. This is a senior clinical leadership position for a consultant who values high-quality patient care, collaborative working, and service development.

You will hold Responsible Clinician (RC) responsibility for patients on Rose Ward, while also contributing clinical expertise and leadership across the wider inpatient wards.

The clinical setting

You will be based across two inpatient areas within Gosport War Memorial Hospital, working as part of a well-established multidisciplinary team that includes:

  • A part-time Consultant Psychiatrist
  • Three Resident Doctors
  • One Middle Grade Doctor
  • Experienced nursing and allied health professionals
  • This structure allows for shared clinical decision-making, continuity of care, and strong peer support.

Your role and responsibilities

As a Consultant Psychiatrist, you will:

  • Provide senior medical leadership and direct clinical care to inpatients
  • Act as Responsible Clinician, overseeing diagnosis, treatment, and discharge planning
  • Lead and support multidisciplinary team working across the wards
  • Ensure care delivery aligns with professional, legal, and ethical standards
  • Contribute to clinical governance, audit, and service improvement initiatives
  • Support teaching, supervision, and training for junior doctors and other staff
  • Engage in service planning and wider Trust developments
  • Your work will be aligned with national standards for mental health services

Person specification

Essential qualifications & registrations

  • Full General Medical Council (GMC) registration
  • MRCPsych or equivalent
  • CCT in Older Persons Psychiatry, or within 12 months of completion at interview
  • Eligible for inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register
  • Section 12(2) approval under the Mental Health Act 1983
