JOB SUMMARY

 

As a member of the Sport Development Team, you will be in charge of developing the University of Glasgow’s Women’s and Men’s Rugby Union clubs. You will be in charge of training our Men’s and Women’s Performance and Development squads, as well as leading the Men’s First Team on match days in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) league, which are normally on Wednesday afternoons. You will also help to recruit and develop self-employed and volunteer coaches who will be in charge of additional teams in both the men’s and women’s clubs. You will collaborate with the Performance Sport Manager, Club Committees, and other members of the Sport Development Team to recruit international-caliber student athletes and elevate the performance of UofG’s Rugby clubs to the top level in BUCS.

Main duties and responsibilities

1. Inspire and lead the Rugby programme by communicating the strategic vision and ensuring that staff and volunteers are contributing to the overall UofG Sport and University goals.

2. Develop programs for all squads at Glasgow University Rugby Clubs to promote high performance and player development in conjunction with full-time education.

3. Oversee the Men’s and Women’s Performance and Development Squad training sessions throughout the season, keeping high performance and player development at the forefront of each session.

4. In charge of monitoring the coaching infrastructure across the clubs, including the recruitment of additional coaches to support the plan and ensuring that all squads receive sufficient coaching. This involves long-term planning for coach provision, such as a coach education program to recruit, train, and retain self-employed and volunteer coaches.

5. Meet the annual Key Performance Indicators agreed upon with the University of Glasgow Sport Leadership Team in accordance with the strategic goals of UofG Sport and the Glasgow University Sports Association (GUSA).

6. In charge of program monitoring and assessment, as well as identifying new initiatives and program aspects to ensure that the program remains professional and focused.

7. To collaborate successfully with other colleagues, particularly those who administer the curriculum, and to leverage available knowledge in areas such as strength and conditioning.

8. To represent the University Rugby Programme by advocating for and actively recruiting the best prospective student athletes to the university.

9. Contribute to the creation and implementation of new service and UofG Sport development projects, finding activities that enhance the student experience and/or service efficacy.

10. Responsible for coaching all rugby coaches and providing necessary support systems to help coaches reach their full potential.

11. Maintain and acquire sufficient professional understanding of current rugby issues at the local, national, and international levels, as well as promote the University’s interests at national, regional, and local meetings and conferences.

12. Build relationships with internal and external departments and organisations to enhance service delivery and program quality, such as Development and Alumni, Recruitment, MVLS Exercise Science Departments, External – Winning Students, Scottish Student Sport, sportscotland, Scottish Rugby, Glasgow Warriors, and BUCS.

13. Foster collaborations with local communities to create mutually advantageous links that align with the University’s strategic goals for local engagement and program growth.

14. Ensure that the welfare of all club members and coaches is constantly prioritised, and provide guidance for strengthening welfare practices across the club.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:

A1 SCQF Level 8 (HND, SVQ4) or equivalent, plus experience in personal development in a similar function.

A2 UKCC Level 2 Rugby Coach (or comparable qualification).

A3 Valid, clean driver’s licence

A4 Current First Aid Qualification (minimum Emergency First Aid) or ability to get accredited status prior to starting the role.

A5 Thorough knowledge and comprehension of the organisation and structure of British / Scottish Student Sport, including competitive programming, opportunities, and structural organisation.

A6 Detailed knowledge and grasp of Scottish Rugby’s organisation and structure.

A7 A thorough understanding of university rugby.

Desirable:

B1 Degree-level education.

B2 UKCC Level 3 Rugby Coach.

B3 Current concussion awareness training, such as ConcussED or similar.

B4: UKCC Level 2 Strength and Conditioning (or equivalent).

B5 Understanding of current trends in the sport/performance sport sector.

B6 Knowledge and expertise using video analysis and GPS tracking tools to increase performance.

E4 Demonstrable experience developing, monitoring, and reviewing high-performance training programs.

E5 Proven experience in leading, mentoring, and developing other coaches.

E6 Proven track record of productive collaboration with partners.

E7 Proven experience handling budgets.

E8 Experience in establishing, reviewing, and improving components of the student experience (or similar).

E9 Experience with partnership development and delivery.

E10 Experience speaking with and influencing individuals from internal and external organisations.

E11 Experience in partnership development and delivery.

Desirable:

F1 Experience competing or coaching at the international level.

F2 Experience working in a university athletic environment.

Terms & Conditions.

The annual salary for Grade 6 will be £32,332 – £36,024.

This is a full-time position (35 hours per week, plus evenings and weekends as needed) with a two-year fixed term.
