JOB SUMMARY
Mechanical Engineer
Salary range: £53,818 – £59,199 per year (based on abilities and experience).
Contract Type: Permanent.
Hours: Full-time or part-time (minimum of 30 hours per week).
Location: Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Harwell, Oxfordshire.

Bring your engineering experience to our Central Laser Facility to learn about the science it can enable. The facility is one of the world’s premier laser facilities, giving scientists mostly from the United Kingdom and continental Europe with access to an unrivalled spectrum of cutting-edge laser equipment.
The CLF has obtained financing for an ambitious £82 million upgrade to our Vulcan facility (known as Vulcan 20-20) to raise its power to 20 PW and energy to 20 kJ. It will be the most powerful laser in the world. We’re seeking for professionals like you to assist develop, build, and maintain a variety of engineering systems for Vulcan 20/20.
As a Mechanical Engineer, you will lead the design of the following:
- Vacuum systems and high vacuum hardware
- High purity gas systems and infrastructure.
- · Motion Systems for Large Optics
- · Chambers and Structures
- We are seeking someone with:

Requirements include an HNC or HND, equivalent degree (BEng), or MEng in mechanical engineering, considerable technical experience, and demonstrated responsibility for budgets, management, risk, and safety.
· Worked in a mechanical or multidisciplinary engineering context.
· Understanding of fundamental mechanical engineering principles, including materials, stress/strain, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer.
• Previous experience managing projects or people.
