The Ministry of Defence Guard Service (MGS) provides high-quality security services at more than 170 MOD sites around the United Kingdom. The MGS has been protecting the Defence Estate for almost 30 years, including high-profile locations such as the MOD Main Building in London, Whitehall, and His Majesty’s Naval Bases at Portsmouth, Devonport, and the Clyde. We offer access control, military working dogs, control room operations, and more security services. We play an important role in supporting the Defence Mission by working to secure the Defence estate and personnel against crime, terrorism, espionage, and sabotage.
The MGS employs around 2,700 people and is part of the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO). MGS Security Officers are frequently the initial point of contact for workers, visitors, and contractors on-site, and we take pride in our professional, customer-oriented culture. Working Pattern:
With 37 hours a week, this is a flexible position. The chosen candidate will be needed to work from the site three days a week. The specific working pattern will be explained in detail during the interview.

Person Specification
As the Area Operations Manager for MGS Area 1, you will have around five Operational Managers as direct reports who will assist you with operational requirements at the units where MGS Security Officers are located. Your primary role is to oversee all areas of operational delivery for your Area of role (AoR), ensuring that the necessary security tasks are completed to a high standard and visiting these sites on a frequent basis, which may include overnight stays.
The main duties are as follows:
- Responsible for directing audit and assurance efforts across the MGS footprint to support and sustain the National Security Industry (NSI) Gold Standard.
- Maintaining an adequate amount of visibility within the AoR and establishing effective communication protocols.
- Respond quickly to complaints and HR casework, ensuring that all Operational Managers (OMs) adhere to MOD Policy when dealing with absence, recruitment, complaints, and misconduct.
- On a yearly basis, AoR reviews and approves unit Joint Business Agreements (JBAs) and working patterns/rosters.
- Ensure that the Department’s resources are used accurately and efficiently by implementing and carrying out an effective audit and assurance system, which includes the correctness of performance and output returns.
- Ensure service delivery remains at agreed-upon levels and provide regular assurance to the Regional Manager by talking with OMs and evaluating information entered on the Performance and Operational Reporting Tool (PORT) and operational output reports.
- Maintaining operational output returns and weekly/monthly maintenance of the Multi Tracking Tool (MTT).
- Ensure good employee relations within AoR by engaging and cooperating with recognised trade unions, involving and discussing with them as needed.
- There is an on-call process that covers the Regional Operational Area; however, this is an optional assignment for the successful candidate.
