The Institute of Making
The Institute of Making is a cross-disciplinary centre that celebrates and explores materials, craftsmanship, and design through research, teaching, and public engagement. Its facilities include a world-class Materials Library and multi-material open-access workshops that enable students and staff to collaborate, innovate, and learn through making.
About the Role
The Workshop Technician will be responsible for the day-to-day running, safety, and administration of the Institute of Making’s workshop spaces. Acting as the first point of contact for users, you will ensure that all workshop activities are carried out safely and effectively while supporting students, staff, and researchers in their creative and technical work.
This hands-on role requires broad technical expertise across multiple materials and making processes. While we value versatility, we are particularly interested in candidates with strong skills in ceramics and glasswork, as the role will include managing the Ceramics Room — covering ceramics, glasswork, mould-making, and casting.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee daily workshop operations, ensuring compliance with UCL’s health and safety policies.
- Support and advise users on materials, techniques, and equipment.
- Maintain and manage workshop tools, materials, and spaces.
- Provide technical expertise and assist in the delivery of academic and research projects.
- Deliver inductions and training for students and staff on safe and effective workshop practices.
- Collaborate with colleagues to maintain an inclusive, creative, and innovative workshop environment.
About You
To succeed in this role, you will need to demonstrate:
- A degree or equivalent experience in a materials, making, or engineering-related discipline.
- Proven experience working in a shared or educational workshop environment, with responsibility for complex, multi-disciplinary projects.
- Proficiency with a variety of precision tools and equipment across areas such as ceramics, metalwork, woodwork, textiles, and digital manufacturing.
- Strong practical skills and in-depth knowledge of ceramic materials and making processes.
- Excellent communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills.
- A proactive, safety-conscious, and collaborative approach to supporting diverse users.
