About the School
The Bartlett School of Environment, Energy and Resources (BSEER) at University College London is a leading global centre for research and teaching on sustainability transitions. The School encompasses four institutes:
- UCL Energy Institute – delivers cutting-edge research and policy support on climate change and energy security.
- UCL Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering
- UCL Institute for Sustainable Heritage
- UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources
The UCL Energy Institute houses the Air Transportation Systems Laboratory (ATSLab), which develops advanced models simulating passenger, freight, airline, and airport behaviour across global aviation networks. These tools quantify the impact of policy, technological change, and infrastructure expansion on the aviation system
Role Overview
We are seeking a Research Fellow to join ATSLab to analyse strategies for expanding London’s airport system while achieving net-zero carbon targets. You will be an integral member of ATSLab, contributing to modelling development, research publications, and collaborations with academic and industry partners in the UK and internationally.
Key responsibilities
- Advance the development of the Airline Behaviour Model.
- Collaborate with academic and industry stakeholders, nationally and internationally.
- Contribute to grant applications and research outputs for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
- Present research findings at national and international conferences.
- Support MSc and PhD student supervision and teaching activities as required.
- This position is available from 1 November 2025 and initially funded for 12 months, with the possibility of extension depending on funding.
Person Specification
Essential:
- PhD in transportation, optimisation, econometrics, or a closely related field (or nearing submission).
- Expertise in transportation modelling and applied optimisation.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Desirable:
- Proficiency in programming languages and software packages such as Python, R, Matlab, CPLEX.
- Experience with large-scale data analysis and simulation modelling.
- Ability to communicate research outcomes to diverse audiences, including academic and industry stakeholders.
