Role Overview
The History Department at the University of Sussex seeks a dedicated Assistant Professor in Modern History to contribute to teaching and research within the department. This position will focus on delivering lectures, seminars, and dissertation supervision for modules in nineteenth- and twentieth-century history, while actively engaging in marking, assessment, and student support.
The post-holder will join a collaborative and interdisciplinary department renowned for its global and comparative approaches to historical inquiry. In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework, the department ranked 4th for research impact, reflecting its strong scholarly reputation.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver lectures, seminars, and workshops in Modern History.
- Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations and research projects.
- Engage in assessment, marking, and student support.
- Contribute to departmental initiatives, fostering interdisciplinary approaches to history.
- Maintain and develop a strong research profile, including publications and conference presentations.
Candidate Profile
PhD in Modern History or closely related field.
Emerging publication record demonstrating research potential.
Expertise in one or more of the following is desirable:
- History of science
- History of emotions
- Global and connected histories
- Experience teaching in the UK higher education sector, including dissertation supervision.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and team-working skills.
