About the Role
The University of Reading’s Centre for Dairy Research (CEDAR) is looking for an experienced and dedicated Calf Rearer to join our commercial farm’s Youngstock team. In this vital position, you’ll be responsible for the daily care, health, and welfare of calves from birth to weaning, ensuring the highest standards of animal husbandry and welfare.
Working as part of a professional and supportive agricultural team, this is an excellent opportunity to contribute to one of the UK’s leading research and commercial dairy operations.
This is a full-time, permanent position based at CEDAR, Reading, with an 11-in-14 rota (averaging 44 hours per week).
Key Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality care for calves from birth through to weaning, ensuring excellent standards of health, nutrition, and welfare.
- Monitor calf growth, health, and development, responding promptly to any issues or concerns.
- Carry out feeding, bedding, cleaning, and general animal husbandry duties in line with best practices.
- Maintain accurate records related to calf management, health treatments, and performance.
- Work collaboratively with the wider dairy team to ensure smooth farm operations and compliance with University and regulatory standards.
About You
Essential:
- Proven experience in calf rearing and dairy farm operations.
- Strong knowledge of animal welfare and dairy calf husbandry.
- Excellent stockmanship and observation skills with great attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Flexible and motivated approach to working within a rota system, including weekends.
Desirable:
- Relevant agricultural qualification or certification.
- Experience working in a research or commercial dairy environment.
