About the Role

The University of Reading’s Centre for Dairy Research (CEDAR) is seeking a dedicated and experienced Dairy Herdsperson to join our commercial dairy team. You’ll be responsible for the day-to-day care of our herd of 530 high-yielding Holstein cows, ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare and husbandry.

This is an exciting opportunity to work within a professional and supportive team that combines commercial farming with world-class agricultural research.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide high standards of daily care and stockmanship for a large dairy herd.
  • Manage and monitor animal health, welfare, and productivity.
  • Assist with milking routines, calving, feeding, and general farm maintenance.
  • Maintain accurate livestock and welfare records in line with regulatory and university standards.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure efficient and sustainable farm operations.

About You

Essential:

  • Proven experience working with dairy cows in a commercial or research environment.
  • Strong knowledge of animal welfare and dairy cow husbandry.
  • Excellent stockmanship skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and communicate clearly.
  • Flexible and motivated approach to work, including weekend and rota duties.

Desirable:

  • Relevant agricultural qualifications or certifications.
  • Experience in high-yield dairy systems.
