Job Description

About the Role

The University of Aberdeen is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow in Power Systems/Electronics to contribute to the EU Horizon Europe MISSION Project, focusing on the development and demonstration of an ultra-fast medium-voltage DC circuit breaker.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of next-generation, SF₆-free switchgear technologies as part of a major European research consortium.

About the Project

The EU Horizon Europe MISSION Project (2024–2027) aims to develop and demonstrate three new SF₆-free switchgear prototypes, including a 12 kV medium-voltage DC circuit breaker.
The project is coordinated by SINTEF and brings together 12 partners, including manufacturers, grid operators, research centres, and universities.

DC circuit breakers (DC CBs) are vital components in future DC transmission and distribution networks. Unlike conventional AC breakers, DC CBs must operate within 2–5 milliseconds and often integrate fast mechanical switchgear with power electronic modules, making them significantly more complex.

About the Research Environment

The Aberdeen HVDC Research Centre comprises approximately 10 members with established expertise in HVDC systems, DC grids, and power electronics.
The Centre maintains strong collaborations with major industrial and academic partners worldwide and has an extensive portfolio of externally funded research projects.
The successful candidate will join a vibrant research environment with access to advanced facilities and expert mentorship.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research on the design, development, and testing of ultra-fast medium-voltage DC circuit breakers.
  • Contribute to modelling, simulation, and laboratory validation of DC breaker prototypes.
  • Collaborate with international project partners within the MISSION consortium.
  • Prepare research papers, project reports, and presentations for academic and industrial audiences.
  • Support research students and contribute to the broader activities of the HVDC Research Centre.

Essential Requirements

  • A PhD in Electrical or Electronic Engineering (or near completion).
  • Demonstrated research experience in power systems, power electronics, or related fields.
  • Familiarity with laboratory experimentation and system testing.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in an international research environment.

Salary and Contract

  • Appointment will be made on Grade 6 of the University’s salary scale (£38,249 – £40,497 per annum).
  • The post is full-time and fixed-term for 23 months, or until 31 December 2027.

Visa Information

Applicants who require a UK visa must meet the eligibility requirements for the Skilled Worker or Global Talent visa routes.
