Overview of the Role
Brighton & Sussex Medical School (BSMS) is inviting applications for a senior clinical academic post in Oncology, available at either Clinical Associate Professor or Professor level. The post includes an honorary consultant appointment with University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (UHSFT) and a central leadership role as Clinical Director of the Brighton & Sussex Clinical Trials Unit (CTU).
This is a strategically important appointment designed to strengthen oncology research, expand clinical trial capacity within Sussex, and support the continued development of the Sussex Cancer Centre and the wider Health and Care Research Partnership.
Senior academics appointed at this level are expected to demonstrate excellence in research, teaching, and medical leadership and to play a key role in strategic planning and academic direction within BSMS and its partner universities.
Primary Responsibilities
1. Research Leadership & Development
- Establish and lead an active programme of oncology research, with particular emphasis on clinical trials.
- Shape the long-term research portfolio within the Clinical Trials Unit, contributing 2 PAs of leadership time.
- Develop innovative trial designs and strengthen recruitment pathways across BSMS and UHSFT.
- Mentor academic and NHS colleagues, supporting their involvement in trials and translational cancer studies.
- Drive grant applications, external funding income and collaborative research across Sussex.
Help expand research activity within both solid tumour oncology and haemato-oncology, building on BSMS strengths in global health, translational haemato-oncology, and population health.
2. Teaching, Education & Academic Leadership
- Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in medicine, surgery, and cancer-related fields.
- Lead educational development to enhance the oncology learning experience for BMBS students.
- Support student-led oncology societies, academic placements, SSCs, and 4th-year research projects.
- Build strong partnerships with external organisations to support clinical education, postgraduate learning and multidisciplinary development.
3. Clinical Responsibilities
- Hold a 0.5 FTE honorary consultant post at UHSFT within Clinical Cancer Services.
- Provide specialist care in medical or clinical oncology, depending on training background (CCT required).
- Work interdisciplinarily with the Sussex Cancer Centre’s expanding clinical trial portfolio, including ongoing research in:
- Gynaecological cancers
- Breast cancer
- Lung cancer
- GI malignancies
- Skin cancers
- Haemato-oncology
- Contribute to post-licensing and optimisation studies across the Trust.
- 4. Professorial-Level Expectations (if appointed as Professor)
- Demonstrate sustained national and international leadership in oncology.
- Show exceptional performance across research, education, innovation, and academic citizenship.
- Undertake significant School-level leadership duties aligned with experience and expertise.
