Role Summary

The University of Reading’s Department of Geography and Environmental Science invites applications for a Lecturer in Physical Geography, combining teaching and research responsibilities. We are looking for candidates with specialist expertise in areas such as hydrology, climatology, biogeography, geomorphology, soil science, or geology, with a strong emphasis on quantitative and computational methods, including remote sensing, GIS, numerical analysis, AI/machine learning, and numerical modelling.

This role offers the opportunity to contribute to both research excellence and teaching innovation, including undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral training, and to develop high-quality research outputs and grant applications. The postholder will participate in outreach activities and interdisciplinary collaborations across the University and beyond.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead original research programs in Physical Geography, producing high-quality publications.
  • Prepare and submit research grant applications to secure funding.
  • Deliver engaging and effective teaching at all levels, including lectures, fieldwork, and computer-based practicals.
  • Support interdisciplinary teaching on the BSc Human and Physical Geography programme.
  • Contribute to the supervision and mentorship of postgraduate and doctoral students.
  • Collaborate across the Department, School, and University to foster an inclusive, innovative research and teaching environment.
  • Participate in departmental administration and support outreach and engagement activities.

Candidate Requirements

Essential Qualifications and Experience:

  • PhD (or equivalent experience) in Physical Geography or a closely related discipline.
  • Demonstrated research record with publications in reputable journals.
  • Experience in securing or contributing to grant applications.
  • Teaching experience at undergraduate level, with ability to teach both fieldwork and computational/quantitative methods.
  • Strong computational or quantitative skills in areas such as GIS, remote sensing, numerical modelling, or AI/machine learning.
  • Excellent communication, organisational, and team-working skills.
